HISTORY

The Triangle Sugar Estate was opened in 1923 when Murray MacDougall, the pioneer of sugar growing in Zimbabwe, saw the possibilities of growing sugar cane under irrigation in the dry lowveld area.

In 1934 he formed a private company to purchase a mill from Natal which was erected by 1936. In 1944 the Government took control of the project and continued to develop the resources and to experiment with new  varieties of cane.

In 1954 the Triangle Sugar Estate was bought from the Government by a syndicate of Natal sugar planters and a new company called Triangle Limited was formed to develop the production of sugar and other food-stuffs in the lowveld area.

The original homestead of Murray Macdougall has been restored and has become the focal point of a museum covering the pioneering heritage of the area. Many original artefacts from Murray Macdougall are on display together with sugar production history of the area. The Museum has been declared a National Monument.
